Ductwork cleaning was on doctor’s orders

When I went to the doctor, I certainly didn’t figure on coming home with orders to call the HVAC company.

But that’s just what my doctor tole me on my last visit.

The last couple of years, I have spent more time inside the central air conditioning of our home than ever before. Of course, this is due to the fact that we were all trying to get through the pandemic. For me, it was particularly stressful since I predisposed for high risk Covid due to a genetic health condition. So I had to be like super vigilant. I literally went nowhere but the store prior to getting vaccinated. And even then, I only ventured into the commercial HVAC of the grocery store as soon as the doors opened in the morning. So when I first came down with a chest cold this summer, I went straight for the Covid test. I was most pleased to repeatedly test negative for the virus. Yet, the cold just wouldn’t completely go away and that went on for more than a month. That’s what led me to see the doctor. She examined me and asked me what I thought were some pretty random questions about our HVAC at home. The doctor figured that the indoor air quality in our home was really poor and that’s why my cold wouldn’t completely go away. She suggested that I call the HVAC company to have them come out to do the ductwork cleaning and ductwork resealing. And that’s all it took to seriously improve our indoor air quality. I even upgraded to a HEPA air filter to help keep it that way.

A bit of effort leads to a ton of HVAC savings

I’m simply loving the fact that we are almost to the finish line when it comes to summer around here.

This is the time of year each end of summer that I’m starting to breathe a bit of a sigh of relief.

I’m not getting cocky quite yet because the air conditioning is still running night and day. We’re not out of the woods but things are changing. Just going out outside of the central air conditioning first thing in the morning reflects a change. I’m up very early and I like to take my coffee on the deck. This is the first time in four months that I don’t hear a symphony of heat pumps at that time of the morning. It’s now getting cool enough during that time of the morning that there is no need for HVAC cooling. That’s a great sign and means that we are closing in on a wrap for this edition of heat season. That doesn’t hurt my feeling at all. I love the next 8 months so much because it’s a combination of great weather and wonderful climate. Our winters hardly even need any HVAC heating. So the best weather of the year is on the way. But I’m also pleased to report that just by following some simple, step by step plans from the HVAC company website, I saved a bunch this summer. It really didn’t take much effort and negligible expense to save nearly 25 percent on HVAC cooling over past summers. So a bit of effort went a very long way when it comes the HVAC cooling costs this year.

HVAC replacement process was a breeze

So much for thinking that replacing the HVAC equipment was going to be a giant headache.

This wasn’t the case at all as the HVAC professionals were on top of every detail from the jump.

This all started early last spring. The HVAC company comes out in the fall and in the spring to perform HVAC maintenance on the heat pump. Really, I call the fall appointment the post summer rehab for the heat pump. Where we live, the heat pump is jamming for four months during the summer months. It’s running night and day in order to provide the HVAC cooling that we need to manage the summer heat and humidity. So when the HVAC technician told us that the heat pump was maybe not going to make it through another heat season, I wasn’t taking any chances. I immediately started the process of having the heat pump removed and replaced. But I wasn’t happy about it because I just hate hassles like this sort of stuff. The first meeting with the HVAC professionals changed all of that though. The HVAC contractor came out to our house to inspect and listen to my wife and I when it came to our heating and cooling needs. From there, he provided several choices of new residential HVAC for us. Once we chose the HVAC unit, they literally took care of everything else. We had new heating and cooling equipment in less than 6 weeks. That’s what I call a hassle free HVAC experience. And I’m all about less stress and less hassle when it comes to life.

The easy answer was ductless HVAC

Life is full of surprises and for sure, I get my fair share of them.

I think over the span of my adult life which is now going into the fourth decade, I’m getting better at rolling with stuff.

When I first started working inside the commercial HVAC of the office, I was so stressed all the time. It was as though I was trying to prepare for every possible scenario. Of course, that’s just not possible. But every time I’d get surprised by something, it felt like a failure. The more I’ve lived, the more I realize that no matter what, things are going to surprise you. So when I helped my daughter buy her first house, I was actually the one who remained calm as we found surprise after surprise. But buying that house came with a big learning curve because it had so much that needed to be done. Still, this was the only way she could get into a house and get out of apartments with bad heating and cooling. The heating and cooling in her house was one of our first surprises. We knew that we’d have to replace the HVAC equipment. That was obvious because it was nearly as old as I am and barely even ran. But we weren’t expecting the ductwork to be worthless. Surprise. However, the HVAC professionals came right through for us and had a ready alternative in the ductless heat pumps. In my mind, I think this was the best of all worlds as they fit the renovations budget better, were more efficient and had great HVAC technology.

Home comfort business

He was out of my reach.

I was standing in the kitchen last week, when I heard a faint cry coming from the basement.

I knew my kids played down there, and I wondered if they hadn’t let the dog or cat locked in.

I opened the door, but no animal bounded out at me. I heard the sound again, but this time it wasn’t nearly as quiet. I was going to close the door, but I heard the sound. It was louder this time, and it sounded human. I walked downstairs and looked around. I realized there was a foot sticking out from behind the furnace. I looked at the foot and hissed. I picked up the phone and called EMS. I told them I needed help and there was someone stuck behind the furnace. When EMS arrived, I took them to the basement and showed him where the person was. There was a man stuck behind the furnace, but he was out of reach from everyone. The only way they could get possibly get him out, was to pulled hard on his leg. Three men stood back and held on tight, trying to dislodge the man, but it wasn’t working. Eventually, the EMS technicians were able to get the man from behind my furnace. He was mumbling about never trying to break into a house through the basement, ever again. He couldn’t believe he had fallen behind the furnace and become stuck. I think my house reformed a potential burglar. Either he would be a reformed burglar, or he would become a HVAC technician now that he had personal knowledge of the furnace.

I told him to control his temper.

I was in the kitchen when I overheard the HVAC technician telling my son to get his butt in the house, but not in those words.

He told him he was annoying and needed to go inside so he could do his work.

That was bad enough, but he soon got even more heated with his words. I went outside and told the HVAC tech that he needed to control his temper or get out of my yard. I couldn’t believe it when he packed up his tools, and left the AC parts sitting in the yard. He climbed into the service van and left. I was sure he was going to come back, but after an hour, I knew I was wrong. I called the HVAC company, and told them the HVAC technician left, but I didn’t tell him why. I was told he said I had cursed him out, and he left because of the harrassment. I was forced to tell him how he was treating my son and told him not to talk that way to or in front of my son. He packed up and left. They sent another HVAC technician to the house, but it took almost two hours before he could get there. I told my son he had to stay in his room until the air conditioning was repaired. When he came downstairs looking for a snack, I told him to ask his sister. If one more HVAC technician left today because he asked so many questions I was going too sell him to the circus.

My mother told me it wasn’t women’s work.

She was in surgery all day, playing with people’s insides and getting blood all over her.

I couldn’t wait to go home and tell my dad about the senior work expo they had presented. I had listened to several people, but the only one that tempted me, was the HVAC presentation. I was sure the first thing he would think was that I wanted to be an HVAC technician because the presenter was adorable, but that wouldn’t be the truth. He was old. He was almost as old as my dad and I thought that was disgusting. After talking to dad, I couldn’t wait for mom to get home from the hospital. Dad and I talked while he made dinner, and then mom got home. I started telling her about the senior work expo. I mentioned the HVAC company being there, and she said it would be a good job for my brother. I wasn’t thinking about my brother, but me. I told her I was considering HVAC as a career. She frowned and told me that HVAC wasn’t women’s work. I should get a job like she had, instead of HVAC. How could being an HVAC technician, be worse than being a doctor. She was in surgery all day, playing with people’s insides and getting blood all over her. I would just be dealing with dirty or broken HVAC systems. I just shook my head and walked away, remembering how my mom wanted me to follow in her footsteps and be a doctor. I knew I didn’t want to be a doctor, and I had told her that from the first time she mentioned. I may not be an HVAC technician either, but it was a better choice than being a doctor.

I had to go back to the morgue.

I had an extremely stressful day and all I wanted to do was go home and get some rest.

  • I had worked at the church all afternoon, trying to get the air conditioning repaired before the evening sermon.

I was no sooner in the house than my beeper went off. I didn’t want to answer, but it was my boss. He asked if I had finished up at the church? I almost said no, but instead I told him I was already home. He asked if I would take one more emergency call before calling it quits for the weekend? I asked for the address, and winced. I wasn’t prepared to go back to the morgue today or any day. The morgue was right next to the church where I had spent my entire day. The morgue was creepy enough during the day, but at night, it was even worse. I headed down and rang the bell at the back door. They young man showed me to the AC unit and thanked me for getting there so quickly. He said some of the people inside were getting testy because it was so hot inside. He was afraid some of the older ladies would have their makeup melting if the air conditioning wasn’t working soon. I had to laugh, especially since all i could see was my grandmother all made up in her powder and rouge, when she was going to church. It didn’t take long to make the repair. I wasn’t as creeped out about the morgue after talking to the young man, but i was tempted to look inside and see the old ladies with melting makeup.

My fiance hated my proposal.

I was in the middle of servicing a customer’s furnace when I decided it was time to propose to my wife.

It seemed like the perfect time to talk to her.

I hit the button for video chat and pressed her phone number. I pulled out a nut, to use as the diamond I had at home. I got down on one knee as soon as she got on the line. I told her how much I loved her, and that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. I hold up the nut and asked if she would marry me. She asked if I was in a basement working on a furnace, and I laughed. She told me it was the worst proposal she could have thought of, and she was not impressed. I should try this again when I wasn’t dirty and substituting a dirty nut for a ring. I wasn’t sure if she was rejecting me, or just upset over my choice of the proposal area, and that I should be clean. I finished up the furnace and went upstairs. The husband was shaking his head and laughing when he saw me. He said he overheard my proposal and it was a good thing I was an HVAC tech. It would be hard to explain why I was calling from a basement. I’m not the smartest, proposing from a basement while working on a furnace, but she knew I was thinking about her. I;ll give her a proper proposal when I see her later that evening, after I’ve cleaned up from work.

But honey, I read the manual.

I got home from work last night, and I couldn’t believe the mess that was in the house.

There were air conditioning parts all over the kitchen.

I asked what happened, because it looked like an air conditioning unit had throw up in the house. I got a chuckle and an apology for making a mess, but there was no move to clean it up. I wasn’t happy and wondering why I had been told there was a problem with the air conditioning unit. I could have called the HVAC company and had them come out and look at the air conditioning unit. I was getting ready to say something rude, when my wife said, ‘but honey, I read the manual.’. How was I supposed to get angry when she looked so cute sitting there. I told my wife I would try to put it back together, but I was tired.I had worked all day and I didn’t want to come home and need to repair the puzzle my wife had turned the air conditioning unit into. It took me nearly three hours to put the AC unit back together so it would work. If someone had told me an HVAC technician would by stymied by an air conditioning unit, I would tell him he had the wrong job. If someone showed me the mess he had to work with, I would be giving him a congratulatory medal for his accomplishments. I knew I deserved a medal. It was like going back to hVAC school and not knowing the difference between an AC unit and a furnace.
