Although I was late, I decided to hire an HVAC business to come service our HVAC system for the winter.

I had been meaning to contact them weeks ago, however life slipped away from myself and my lovely lady and I continued to put it off. When I finally had a free weekend at home, I called the HVAC business and set up an appointment to have our HVAC system worked on for the season. It was late, however, it was better than never. When the HVAC professional got to our house, he told us how grateful he was that I’d scheduled an HVAC tune up even though it was late in the season. I was really glad that he mentioned it because it made me realize my mistake. According to him, he said that a lot of other homeowners would have simply avoided calling an HVAC professional at this point in the season out of convenience. It was these homes that suffered the most and ended up doing more damage whether they realized it or not. Having your HVAC system worked on by an HVAC professional at least twice a year is very essential. Only HVAC pros are trained to find things that hadn’t even happened yet and they are able to prevent them from occurring. Having your HVAC system worked on also helps to keep your HVAC components running more efficiently, which means lower energy bills. Along with all of this, the professional care and attention would create a longer lifespan for your HVAC system. Hearing all of this from the HVAC professional really validated our decision to call and I’m so glad I did!

 

I Almost Didn’t Call The HVAC Company

I decided to begin house hunting while I was in one of the most brutal times in history to purchase a house. I didn’t arrange this, however, but unluckily it was the way things worked out. I saved diligently for a reasonable down payment and I told myself that whenever I had enough saved up, I would contact a real estate agent. It just so happened that I had our down payment saved up while I was in this crazy real estate market. After trying many times and putting in countless offers on houses, we finally moved into our first home. As a current homeowner, I’ve been studying a lot about general service and upkeep. One of the areas that I have been really struggling with is our HVAC system. I didn’t really understand anything about HVAC systems or how they worked or how much service went into running them efficiently. Then during our first month of living in this house the two of us experienced a significant drop in temperature and I thought it would be a bright idea to raise the temperature on the control unit. In our mind, the dial thermostat needed to be set higher in order to combat the frosty temperatures. I learned the difficult way that this was a horrible plan because our house was already warm! All I did was make our furnace run extra long and cause stress on our HVAC system, and not to mention that I heated up our house and we were forced to open a few doors and windows to let the heat escape. I still don’t reckon that I know much about HVAC systems, even though I guess raising the temperature on the old dial thermostat when the temperature outside is cooler isn’t the answer.

My house isn’t large, however, it isn’t tiny either.

Even though it’s considered the middle of winter, the temperature has been mediocre for the past week. Last week, the high temperature we hit was 40 degrees and this week the temperature has risen past 70 degrees every day! I went from sweaters and boots to t-shirts and sandals within a matter of a few mornings. At one point, the temperature got so sizzling that I considered turning our furnace off and switching our AC back on. This was only a brief thought because I didn’t want the hassle of switching the air con back on. I had already had the HVAC system worked on before I turned on our furnace for the season, so I didn’t want to mess anything up with our air conditioning system. I didn’t know too much about HVAC systems, however turning on the air conditioning randomly for a few mornings and then shutting it off for an entire season seemed impractical! My HVAC system would have to run tirelessly to cool the entire house down, only to be told that it no longer needed cooling down. Then, our furnace would have to do the opposite and warm up the entire house once again. My house isn’t large, however, it isn’t tiny either. Heating and cooling an entire house within a short time frame used a lot of energy and put a lot of stress on an HVAC system. This is why I didn’t really turn our AC unit back on when there was a warmer than normal month while I was in the winter. Instead, I opened the doors and windows and let our house cool naturally with good old Mother Nature.

I’ve been hearing our crazy brother rave about his programmable thermostat for weeks now.

• He received it when he snagged a coupon in the mail for the hardware store as he didn’t want to miss out on a fantastic deal.

Instead of admitting that he didn’t really need anything for his house, he scoured the website to try to find something to use the coupon on. When he discovered the site about smart programmable thermostats, he immediately knew that this was what he wanted for his house and after it was installed he immediately began experimenting with it. He downloaded an app that connected to his smart wifi thermostat via wireless and he scrolled through the various settings. He loved looking at the temperature in his house and making sure that his heat and air were both running efficiently. I would argue that he became obsessed with the smart wifi thermostat app and his home’s temperature settings. I hated his darn smart thermostat just because I was growing weary of hearing his appreciation for it. Eventually, I started researching smart control units on my own because I didn’t believe all the things our brother was saying. When I realized that the smart control component really did have amazing benefits, I contemplated ordering one myself. I wanted the wireless capability, efficiency charts, and virtual temperature adjustments in our own home. The only complication though, was that I spent so much time bashing our brother and his goofy little thermostat that now, I really want one myself. However, I don’t want to be a hypocrite.

This thing produces the very best indoor air quality possible

It’s been 18 months since I started what has been a bit of an odyssey for me. I’m 51 years old and for the first time in my adult life, I’m actually in pretty good physical shape. The days of coming home to sit in the central air conditioning of my house to eat and drink all I want are over. And to be honest, I’m not missing it the way I figured I would. But even more surprising is the fact that I’m enjoying getting out of the central air conditioning of home for exercise. I’m actually liking going to the gym where they have great commercial HVAC. And I like going for long walks, hike as well as enjoying swimming at the gym as well. It’s like a whole new world for me. Along with the exercise came a sea change when it came to my diet. Gone were the beers and foot long sub sandwiches. Now, my diet is primarily plant based and I’m not really minding it. This is a revelation like no other for me. But this kind of diet allows me to feel so much better not to mention all of the weight I’ve lost. Basically, I’ve lost the equivalent of a third grader in the past 18 months. I’m healthier than I’ve ever been. I doubled down on improving my respiratory health by adding a whole home air purification system to the HVAC unit. This thing produces the very best indoor air quality possible. So getting healthy has come with the healthiest indoor air quality as well. But really glad that the rest of my family can benefit from the great air thanks to the HVAC upgrade.

My wife was sort of being a bit strange this summer. There were times where she wanted me to call before I left the zone controlled HVAC of the office to come home. It wasn’t to pick something up from the store or go grab a kid from some activity. She just didn’t want me to simply show up at home. That seemed really curious to me. And then, I saw an HVAC van roll up just as I was leaving for the commercial HVAC of the office one morning. It wasn’t time for the HVAC maintenance as we just had the air conditioning tune up done a few months prior to summer starting. I called my wife from the car to ask what the HVAC professionals were doing at the house. She told me it was just a mistake and that the HVAC technician got the wrong address. I let that one slide as well. A few weeks later, I could smell saw dust when I walked by the basement door. But my wife forbade me from going down to check out the source of the smell. That’s when I figured something was up. Well, I just had my 50th birthday a week ago and the big reveal was my present. My wife and kids had created me a man cave in the basement complete with a ductless heat pump of my very own. They decorated it very cool with my alma mater memorabilia as well as cool pictures and neat stuff on the wall. There was a bar and a giant TV along with several recliners and a couch. It’s going to be a great football season this year!

I don’t mind at all obeying rules and following the laws.

That’s sort of part of the social contract that we agree to when we’re part of a society. And there are all manner of rules and regulations outside of formalized state and federal laws. I just ran afoul of some rather inane HOA regulations pertaining to the HVAC equipment at my home. The rule is that residential HVAC cannot be seen from the street. First, this seems like such a random rule. I mean are we all trying to pretend that we don’t have heating and cooling in our homes? And since when did the sight of an HVAC cabinet alongside a home create such turmoil that it has to be hidden? Clearly, I was missing something with all this hide the HVAC business. Actually, I was completely unaware of any sort of regulations when it came to my very own HVAC equipment. So when I cut the privacy hedge a bit short on that side of the house, it came with unforeseen repercussions for sure. It wasn’t 24 hours later before I had a nasty little not from the HOA taped to the front door. I was told to build a fence to keep the HVAC from view or replace the hedge. What sort of logic went into this move is beyond me. I mean, the hedge will grow back. And you have to be at the perfect angle just to see the HVAC cabinet from the street anyway. I’m currently ignoring the threats from the HOA over this HVAC madness and just letting the hedge continue to grow and end all this idiocy.

I was stunned to see my husband walk right into the zone controlled HVAC of where I work.

Immediately, my mind sort of went to panic mode because this was highly, highly unusual for him to come to my office. And to show up unannounced was pretty much unheard of really. But my instant near freak out melted away pretty quickly when I saw his face. Not only was he beaming and looking right at me, he looked really good. My husband is the sort that cleans up really well. But he just doesn’t do it all that often. When he came right up to my desk and pulled me close for a hug and a kiss, I knew for sure that there wasn’t an emergency. Yet, the idea of my man showing up inside the commercial HVAC of my office was still such a puzzle. The boss walked out about then and told me to have a great time. I had no clue what he was talking about since I had meetings and stuff scheduled for later that afternoon inside the zone controlled HVAC of the office. But she told me she has all that covered and to just go have fun. That’s when my husband helped me get my stuff together, took me by the hand and walked me to his car. From there, we cranked the air conditioning and set off on a three hour ride to a surprise. The whole way I had no clue where we’d end up. But since he had packed me a bag, I knew we weren’t coming home tonight. We ended up at a romantic inn with a renown spa. And we enjoyed the wonderful quality heating and air of the honeymoon suite for four glorious days.

Honestly, the condition of my garage was simply a disgrace.

And I really had nobody to blame but myself. It’s kind of one of those deals where it’s death by a million cuts and nicks. When we bought this house, I was so thrilled just to have a garage. Well really, I was super happy just to be in a house with our own HVAC equipment. Since graduating college and getting married, my wife and I had to go the rental route. That route came with some pretty inferior heating and cooling to be quite frank. So having our own place was such a big deal for us. And having a garage was sort of the topper. That garage was awesome and I kept it neatly organized. However, the kids started coming along and the garage ended up being a bit of a dumping ground really. It’s like if we couldn’t find a place for something, it went out to the garage. And a decade of this routine and I was embarrassed to even open the garage door. So I didn’t. Finally during the pandemic, I took the time to take back the garage. Once I was able to get stuff tossed, organize the rest and clean the place, I was happy to have my garage back. I ended up spending much more time out there working on stuff and just making that sort of a me space. That’s what led me to call the HVAC professionals. They put the topper on my reclaiming the garage by installed residential HVAC out there. I now have a ductless heat pump in the garage that provides me with great heating and cooling.

It really wasn’t the plan to have more than our two kids.

But that was prior to learning about what foster kids could do for our family.

We have welcomed several foster children into the quality heating and air of our home over the years. And of course, this came with blessing of our biological children. In fact, it was our son, the oldest, who suggested that we help one of his friends in school. This kid was not in a good situation. He was trying so hard but his family was in a very bad place with addiction and other problems. They lived in a series of low rent apartment with the last one not even having any residential HVAC. So he came to stay with us once he went into the foster care system. Since then, we’ve actually added more space to our home to accommodate other children who are in need. There are two additions that we added to our home. They both serve as bedrooms for up to four kids if needed. The HVAC professionals installed ductless heat pumps in the new additions. I learned that the existing HVAC unit just wasn’t big enough to take on the added air volume. But having the ductless heat pumps has been great. The kids love it because they have their own thermostats in those new spaces. We love it because the ductless heat pumps are really efficient and do a great job of providing quality heating and air in those rooms. It’s a blessing to be able to help our kids and provide a safe, supportive place for them to live.
