I love Chinese food, and I used to think I could eat it every day until I moved into an apartment that was right across the street from a Chinese restaurant.

The smell of frying chicken, pork, and shrimp was starting to gag me.

I thought I could feel the grease on my skin, even though I was at least 100 yards from the place. I was glad I had only signed a three-month lease, and positive the Chinese restaurant was the reason for offering such short-term leases. When my lease was coming up for renewal, I called the landlord and gave him my notice. I wasn’t going to sign another lease, and I was giving him the requested one-month notice. He wasn’t happy with me and told me I would need to pay another month’s rent, since that would put me one day over the lease, and I refused. I said I would be out in time. I wasn’t sure where I was going to go, but I didn’t want to spend the summer in that apartment. I had already gone without heating, and I would not go without air conditioning when summer started. I was talking to my girlfriend who told me I could stay with her until I found another apartment. I had spent a lot of time at her place, and the HVAC system was excellent. The only thing she complained about was how much noise the pipes made when the heat first turned on. As long as I was living with her, I thought I could convince her to let me move, and maybe we could be a permanent couple.

Closing day had finally arrived. We had to sit in the lawyer’s office and sign papers, while handing over the bank check to pay for our new house. We looked over all the documents and had the check list of everything they were leaving in the house. I was a bit confused when I looked at our paperwork we signed with the realtor and what he offered for us to sign. I wanted to know where the air conditioning unit was. He said it was something that went with the house and it wasn’t necessary to declare it. I showed him where the initial paperwork said there was a new HVAC system in the house, including an air purification system. He told us that if anything was missing when we did a walk-through after taking over ownership, we should call him. We went directly to the house to do our walk-through and I was taking notes. The first thing we took notice of, was that the air conditioning unit was missing. There were two old window air conditioners in the downstairs windows. The furnace was an old furnace that had to be from the middle ages and there was no air purification system. The lawyer called the realtor and she said she didn’t know they had taken anything but their belongings. Now, we need to go to court to get payment, or have them return everything they took and shouldn’t have. I couldn’t believe the realtor didn’t know they took the new HVAC system, and some of the light fixtures from the house. That was why we chose to buy this house.

After spending a week in the country, I thought my boys and I would welcome getting back to the city.

The first thing we noticed was the smog hanging over the buildings.

When we got out of the car, the air was dank and the boys couldn’t wait to get into the apartment. While we were gone, the HVAC system in the apartment building, had died, and we were super miserable. The air quality in the apartment was worse than it was outside. My boys started complaining asked if they could move to the country with grandma and grandpa. They had a smaller house that was within walking distance of the farmhouse and they told us that anytime we wanted to get out of the city, we could come stay with them. I worked from home, which I had done ever since the pandemic began over than three years ago.I enjoyed putting my kids on the school bus and getting them off, but I hated the city. The only reason we stayed here was because of the boys’ dad, but he only visited every other month. I called my in-laws and asked if the offer was on the board to let me buy the small house from them. I had already seen it and it had a brand new HVAC system, complete with an air purification system. I couldn’t believe how happy they sounded to have us move back to the country. They asked if I was waiting until school was over. When I said we could move over Christmas, since I had to put in a one month notice to the superintendent, they were both crying.

My ex in-laws had a small farm outside of where I lived, and they were always asking if I would bring the kids to visit. I had never been to the farm because my ex-husband hated it there. He said he moved to the city to get away from the smell of pigs and cow manure. He wouldn’t go back even if it meant he never saw his family again. I promised his family I would bring the kids to visit every chance I got. This year, we were going to be sleeping in the barn. My father-in-law kept promising the boys he would sleep in the barn with them when they were a bit older, and that was to be this year. I thought I should sleep in the barn with them. It didn’t take long for me to go back inside since the boys were having fun with their grandpa. The air was so foul that I could barely breathe. I walked into the house and mother-in-law didn’t think it was going to take me that long to come inside. She told me they had an air purification system in the house to help keep the smell of the pigs and cows from ruining their dinner. She said that was the only part of living on a farm that she didn’t like. They didn’t have a lot of need for air conditioning because there was a cool breeze blowing through the house all summer long. They had a full-house fan that pulled the heat out on the warmer days. She told me the first thing they did when they moved in, was install a new HVAC system with a whole-house air purification system included.

When the pandemic began, I read they were not allowing cruise ships to dock and let crew or passengers off the ship.

• They were afraid that passengers who were already sick had infected everyone on the ship and it would make the pandemic even worse.

I got a frantic call from my best friend, who was stuck on one of those ships. She said there was no air purification, and she was worried everyone was going to get COVID 19 and die. I asked why the air prufication system wasn’t working and she said it was because there was no HVAC. When the ship docked, all the power was turned off, but the emergency lighting. There was no HVAC with the emergency lights. They were doing their best to accommodate everyone, but they had to ration what food they had, so no one starved. After two weeks in the ship, people were starting to be released, but by that time she wasn’t feeling well. She thought it was because of lack of HVAC and air purification, but no one wanted to take that chance. Instead of putting her in the sick ward with other COVID patients, they left her in her stateroom. It was just her and her husband and they were serving them in their room. I can’t imagine how scary it had to have been being cooped up in a small ship state room with no HVAC or air purification. She said they were having fun going to the casino and playing in the arcade until her allergies acted up. That’s when she realized they were taking the pandemic serious.

I have heard people rave about train travel. My best friend said it was the most relaxing way to travel. You weren’t stuck in seats like a sardine can, and you could walk without tripping over someone. The only problem with a train, was that they didn’t served meals or drinks, and you were stuck on it for twenty-four hours for a trip we could have driven in twelve. The HVAC system on the train was also poorly constructed. One train car was cool while another was hot. It seemed each train car had its own HvAC system, but none of them worked well. I was halfway to my destination when I started to shiver. I talked to the train conductor who said the air conditioning was running and they couldn’t get it to regulate. I asked if there was a thermostat and he said yes, but it was controlled by the engineer. When everyone else was complaining about the cold, the conductor told us we would stop at the next station and have the HVAC system repaired. An hour later, everyone was cheering because the heat had turned on and the train was bearable again. It was less than two hours later when the heat wouldn’t turn off. I went from shivering to wishing I could take clothing off and be comfortable. Once again, we were notified we would stopping at the next station and the HVAC company would make another repair. I was glad I only had four more hours on the train, and I was never going to get another one as long as I lived.

My best friend and I went on a vacation to the Bahamas. We had saved for over a year to get enough money to get a small bungalow on the beach. Wethought it was going to be the most amazing trip we would ever take, except for when I went on my honeymoon. This was to be our last friend’s hurrah before I got married. We followed the weather reports for the month before we were to get on the plane, and it looked like it was going to be perfect weather the entire week. When we arrived at the airport in the Bahamas, there was a flurry of activity. They were expecting a tropical storm, and they were putting up sand bags to keep the beach from eroding. They said it shouldn’t affect our vacation for more than a day or two, except for higher tides. We had an entire week in this paradise, and we didn’t care to miss a day or two. When the storm came in, however, it was a category one hurricane with a lot of rain and wind. The power was knocked out on most of the island, and we didn’t have any air conditioning. The temperatures were comfortable, but the humidity was outrageous. Without air conditioning, we weren’t getting any sleep, and we couldn’t go out because of the rain. They brought large umbrellas to our bungalow so we could get to the kitchen for food, but without power, they couldn’t cook, so we had sandwiches for three days in a row. I never thought anything could ruin our Bahamas vacation, but lack of air conditioning almost did.

At the beginning of the year, I signed up for a contest where the grand prize was a cruise to Alaska. All expenses were included, including airfare to and from the port of call, and cab fare. We had money for spending, plus an open meal plan and alcoholic drinks. We even got to sit at the captain’s table one night. I felt like a high-priority guest, which is what we were. We had a large cabin with its own balcony, which is the first place we were showed to once we got on the ship. I was excited to watch the wake left behind as the ship sailed through the water. It was cold in the room when we first walked in and the steward told us the HVAC system didn’t turn on until the boat was in motion. We had the balcony doors open to pull some warm ocean breeze in. Once we set sail, I waited for the HVAC system to turn on. The air had taken on a slight nip since we were now on the ocean, and we had to close the balcony doors. I called down to the concierge and told them our HVAC system still wasn’t working, and they sent an on ship HVAC technician to our cabin. He worked on the HVAC system for about ten minutes, and he said he couldn’t get any power to it. He offered to bring in a couple of space heaters since they didn’t have any empty cabins at the moment. We accepted the space heaters, but it wasn’t like having an HVAC system. It was either too hot or too cold in the cabin, and they weren’t sure when the HVAC system could be repaired.
