My best friend and I decided to move across the country so we could live somewhere with better weather. I wanted to be somewhere with lots of sunshine, but I couldn’t stand being in the tropical rainforest anymore. Jack and I moved across the country to the West Coast and it was the best move we ever made. I found a job working at a local repair service that handles commercial boilers and air conditioners. That commercial repair service paid me a sign on bonus, because they were desperate for Nate certified HVAC technicians. Jack found a job working at a bank and the two of us were making really good money. It took some time for me to get used to the new place. I was constantly getting lost when I had to go to HVAC repairs in the country. We had a couple of commercial clients that were outside of the city. The first time I had a job in the country, I got lost coming back and ended up in the desert. I knew I was heading in the wrong direction, but there were 18 miles of one lane roads and absolutely no way to turn around until all of the construction was over. I was more than a half-hour late for the repair. After that, I downloaded an app on my phone so I would get lost anywhere. Even if I don’t have cell phone service, I can still access the maps and use that feature to guide me back to a predetermined spot on the map.

I called the customer instead of knocking a third time

Last year, a lot of customers purchased air cleaning equipment from the HVAC supplier where I work. Some of the folks bought a one-year service contract with the air cleaning machines. The folks that bought a service contract started to have issues about six months after the contract was up. Many of the customers were not properly maintaining the air cleaning equipment. One customer called the repair business and set up an appointment for service on the whole home air purifier. I responded to the service call. The older woman seemed very nice and friendly. She offered me a bottle of water and didn’t bother me at all while I was evaluating the problem. I told the customer exactly what was wrong with the air purifier and I gave her an estimate for the repairs. The woman signed the repair estimate and I started working. I spent almost three hours at the service address. I didn’t finish with the job until after lunch time. I packed up all of my tools and walked out to the truck. I prepared the statement for the customer and I even added a ten percent discount coupon code. I walked back up to the door and I firmly knocked. No one answered the door, so I firmly knocked a second time. I had just left through the front door, and I assumed the customer did not hear me not. I called the customer instead of knocking a third time. The woman answered the phone on the first ring and she told me to go away. She wasn’t going to pay for the repair.

Working as an HVAC repair technician, I encounter a variety of different problems throughout the day.

From Monday to Friday, I might work on seven or eight different types of heating or cooling machines.

I do my best to prepare for every situation by having the right tools on my truck. I have a number of items to fix heat pumps, furnaces, air conditioners, and boilers. I carry specialty repair parts on the truck as well. I rarely need to go to the home improvement store in order to complete a basic heating or air conditioner repair job. Because the truck is filled with lots of parts and accessories, I have to be careful. There is a lot of theft in the city and I often work on repairs that are downtown. A couple of months ago, one of my friends was working downtown and the guy got robbed. The guy held my friend up with a gun so he could steal an air conditioner off the back of the truck. The guy left on foot and my friend got a good description of the guy. The police apprehended the suspect. I always worry about my safety when I am in the city. I carry a can of pepper spray in the truck and on my keychain and I always park the work vehicle in a well-lit area where there is a lot of traffic. It’s small things like this that sometimes make a difference. So far I’ve been lucky and I believe my safety procedures are the main reasons why.

It’s incredibly difficult to find a parking spot downtown.

I never go there on the weekends, unless it is absolutely necessary.

Throughout the weekdays, I only go downtown if I have a heating or AC repair job. I usually find someone else that doesn’t mind taking the downtown job, but last Thursday I had to go to a commercial property to handle an AC problem. I knew parking was going to be an issue. I called the commercial property ahead of time so I could ask the manager to get me a parking spot right outside of the building. The manager agreed, but there was no spot available when I arrived. I didn’t know what problem was occurring with the AC, so I didn’t want to take all of my tools inside of the building. I parked three blocks down the street and walked up to the commercial property. I spoke with that manager and then I evaluated the problems. I had to make several trips back and forth to my repair truck and I was aggravated and annoyed that the manager didn’t come up with a better solution to the problem. I called my boss and I told the guy that I wasn’t going downtown anymore unless we have a dedicated parking space in front of the commercial buildings. My boss informed me that he has a stack of applications with tons of people that won’t mind walking three blocks to the jobsite. I honestly didn’t expect that to be his response, so I didn’t say anything else the rest of the day.

I work out of a newly built office building located in the downtown area.

The building is large, modern and constructed mostly out of glass.

I am fortunate to have a corner office on the tenth floor. I have a really beautiful view. For safety reasons, the windows are not able to be opened. There is no way to bring in any fresh air. The glass is tinted to deflect the sun and prevent the interior from heating up. However, the outdoor conditions still impact the indoor temperature. During the summer, the glass becomes very hot and causes the offices to feel warmer. In the winter, when the outside temperature plummets into the negatives, the glass is cold. The building is entirely temperature controlled, but none of the management team has access to the thermostat. Control over the indoor temperature and the heating and cooling system is managed by the corporate offices. Those offices are located on the opposite side of the country. Everything is set according to the date on the calendar rather than what is going on with the weather. Sometime in May, the air conditioner starts up and provides non stop cooling. Even if it’s especially chilly weather, there’s cool air pouring from the vents. I often need to bring sweaters into the office to keep warm. At a specific point in the fall, the system switches into heating mode. The weather might still be hot and humid, and yet there is heated air flowing into the office. We run fans and sweat. It’s difficult to accomplish my workload.

Last year, my sister and I decided to invest in a rental property.

This is something that we have never done before, but after doing some research and getting advice from our good friend Samantha, who is a realtor, we took the leap.

Samantha found the perfect property for us to invest in and she took care of all the paperwork, and we had no issues closing on the property. The entire process took about 4 months from beginning to end, which is about the average time it takes to buy a house in our state. The house that we purchased was a three-bedroom two-bathroom townhouse that needed very little maintenance before it was ready to be rented. Samantha gave us the phone number to her handyman who she typically uses to perform repairs for her rental properties. His name is John, and he was able to fix all the minor issues that we encountered for a good price. We replaced the kitchen sink and did some minor upgrades to one of the restrooms. John also suggested that we changed the blinds from the horizontal blinds to vertical ones. We appreciated his advice because the vertical blinds were more stylish. John did a great job, and my sister and I decided that we will use him as our handyman to perform all the home repairs for this rental property. It’s good to have a reliable handyman to take care of repairs when they arise, we also need to find an HVAC repairman to perform the necessary maintenance. We are hoping to have this property rented soon with Samantha’s help. It’s good to have a real estate agent available when investing in rental properties.

Fortunately, university boards across the country have had the same concerns, and they have taken a few measures to improve the air quality in multiple of their universitys.

Working from home has become the current normal for many people. For me, the experience has been great because it has created more balance in our life. However, for some parents, the ordeal became a immense nightmare. My buddy Jessica struggled a lot because she was juggling her full-time task while simultaneously homeuniversitying her multiple young children. That is no easy task to conquer, and I can understand the challenges that she faced. So, when the kids were able to return to university, Jessica did not hesitate to send them back instantaneously. However, she was anxious about the air quality in her children’s universitys, and she wanted to make sure that the air that they were breathing was free from viruses and pollutants. Having common ventilation in universitys is essential for the safety of children, and the pandemic has brought this issue to the table. It is a sufficient concern, and it should be given the utmost consideration. Fortunately, university boards across the country have had the same concerns, and they have taken a few measures to improve the air quality in multiple of their universitys. Some university boards have approved the use of COVID relief funds to replace their Heating as well as A/C systems, and universitys that had no Heating as well as A/C systems are currently installing them. These multi-million-dollar projects will guarantee that the air quality inside university buildings is clean, and they will help to prevent the spread of viruses. The Heating as well as A/C replaces should provide parents some peace of mind knowing that their children are breathing scrub air when they are at university.

Mia plus I have been friends since all of us were in junior high university. The people I was with and I became friends because she came to my rescue when some women were picking on me in the cafeteria of our university. If it wasn’t for Mia, I don’t suppose what would have happened to me, so I am grateful that she was kind enough to come to my rescue that day. Mia plus I went to the same high university plus have reMEd friends even after all of us chose to go away to school. The people I was with and I now live in odd states, plus all of us haven’t seen each other in almost many years – partly because of the pandemic plus the lockdowns. However, now that things are getting back to “normal”, I recommended that all of us take a quick weekend trip to an island for some rest plus relaxation. To my surprise Mia said no because she was anxious about the air quality on an aircraft. I asked Mia if she had been to a restaurant lately, plus she said yup, plus after that I asked her if she sat inside. To which she answered that she did. I proceeded to tell Mia that the air quality in aircrafts is cleaner plus has less pollutants than the air quality in a restaurant. At first, Mia didn’t recognize me, so I sent her the study that states that the air inside the cottage of a plane is circulated plus exchanged between 10 to 30 times per minute, plus the recirculated air goes through HEPA filters, which remove close to 99% of the pollutants in the air, then needless to say, Mia was surprised to see the results of the study, plus the nice news is, all of us are headed to the islands next week.

It was going to be rough.

This is what kept ringing in my head the day I got laid off from work. The whole supplier was making losses so the decision was to kneel off 50% of the staff, then everyone had seen this coming, but it was still a big shock. This meant I had to look into a few things if I was to survive until I got another job, and first, I had to check in with my parents about some money they had provided me. This would help me cover rent for a year and also offset some bills. But, I also had to cut my costs until I was back on my feet. That first month, I took notice of my cooling bill and realized it was too high, however given I’d also incur big electric costs in winter, I had to find a solution to this. I called the A/C company which did my upgrade to send me an Heating and A/C expert to inspect my unit. Keeping it working efficiently was at the top of my list. My dad is an excellent man, after she and my Dad split up, she typically made sure she was in our lives.

At first, the situation between them was best described as awkward, however but, they soon dealt with the hurt feelings and began co-parenting, and my Dad even managed to find another partner and got married.

But, it took dad multiple years before she was ready to settle down again, however her focus was her supplier and kids, the time she got married again, she bought a appealing house for her new family and the two of us each had a study room in it. But, when they got two kids, there wasn’t enough room for all of us! Dad being dad, she wasn’t about to let us not have space in her home, then so, she set about converting the garage into an extra two study rooms, then it was a double space garage which would suit us older kids since it was also private. The only issue was figuring out how to air condition the space. Dad has the option of extending the air duct which only served the apartment and not the garage. After speaking with an A/C worker, she realized this was going to be time-consuming and also cost a lot of money. The other option was to install ductless A/C systems. Dad would buy two so that my sibling and I had one in each room. The A/C worker’s supplier had a 50% off offer on ductless ACs which dad jumped at. Every one of us ended up installing the new ductless A/C systems in just a few minutes. It was the best decision ever not to extend the air duct into the garage.
