This past weekend was slammed in my town, with all of the streets filled with people looking at the flower artwork on the streets.

I am curious to see how many people are out and about now that it is Monday morning.

I will go out at 11am and take a little cruise around town to see what is left of the place. I am going to be flying in a month to meet my brother in another country and am getting ready to buy the ticket. I need to see if we are staying in an air conditioned hotel or if I am going to try and stay with a friend living there. I may see if my bandmate wants to haul our gear over there and play each night for the week we will be there. We could play in local businesses, as long as there is some a/c in the place, and I think we could make enough money to cover the cost of the trip. I think it would cost me about $500 for the trip, which is just about how much I have in the bank right now. I think I could pay for the climate controlled plane ride and hotel with my credit card, so then the trip would only cost me about $200 cash, which is the amount I would spend there. I can work a bit more also for the local contractor and that would offset any extra money I spent. I just want to see a family member as it has been five months since seeing anyone in my family.

I know that the nomadic life is not for all, especially those people who have a family.

Some people just want the security of a nice home and a steady job, but for me that is a death sentence into monotony and boredom.

The drawback to my type of lifestyle can be loneliness and fear, as you can be on your own for chunks of time and not sure what direction you are heading in. I have a fun life, but it can also be lonely when you are on your own with no wife or kids. The HVAC business where I work is good for me because it is pretty steady work, and I like doing geothermal heat pump installations for people in their homes and talking with them. Anyway, I am pretty darn sore after playing several games of ball last night, which I did instead of singing because my throat was hurting. We sang beside this local business a few days ago and I strained my vocal cords from singing too loudly, so now I am resting it and just doing some duct cleaning jobs on my own. I won’t talk for a few days and rest my throat so that we can sing again later this week for this local contractor who is having a party. I think a few days off from singing will be good for me because I will crave singing and having fun again with the band. We both work as HVAC techs and are planning on making music the main business soon.

A nice home is a good thing, but when it is the sole focus of your happiness then it may not bring true happiness. I know because I was doing this same thing. I would work at a job that didn’t satisfy me and then try to update and buy things for my home, thinking that it would satisfy me and make me happy. But all those new things didn’t make me feel content deep down and I was always longing for more. Eventually, I sold my home and opted to pursue the performing arts in air conditioned clubs around the country and the world, and this change made this local business owner a lot happier. A new granite countertop is great, but it pales in comparison to entertaining a group of lively travelers from around the world and connecting with them through laughter. I now play music beside a crackling fireplace in a ski lodge and make fun songs while we are all heating up beside the fire. I used to think a new swimming pool would make me happy, but now I know that it is about creating something unique and connecting with people that will bring me lasting joy. I still do my heating and cooling work for the local contractor, but now I don’t come home and stare at my new kitchen thinking it’ll make me happy. I live in a simple and small flat now and chose to rent instead of owning so I can focus my energy on things that are bigger than a new air purifier or kitchen sink.

I have a good setup where I am living now with my wife.

We both work from home and we each have our own office, hers being her bedroom and mine being my little office up front near the living room. We met on the beach one day and just knew it was right, so we got married about a year later and she is the best thing I could have hoped for. I thought I was never going to get married and be with someone long term, but this one seems to be the perfect fit for me. HVAC system repairs is what she does part time when not at home and I just write about heating and cooling systems all day long basically. I like to write and it gives me some alone time to connect with my spirit while making a little bit of money. My wife works for this new contractor part time doing heated floor sales and she also does some smart thermostat programming for people who need help with their. I think some of these new devices are a bit too smart and a lot of people have problems with trying to operate the things. I used to have an old dial thermostat in my home when I lived in the States and was so happy when the new wifi thermostats came out because I didn’t have to adjust it all the time to stay cool or warm. Anyway, I am content finally with the life I am living and I hope the same goes for you too.

It’s been a whole new world for me the last 9 or 10 months.

Having grown up and lived all of my life way down south, I got my first full bite of Winter this year.

And it still has left a bitter taste in my mouth. Just for the record, I hate this sort of Winter. Until just this year, I hadn’t even seen a gas furnace much less used one. But good Lord, I used that gas furnace like it was a lifeline for five months. I moved up here in late September which was gorgeous. The fall was spectacular. That is until it wasn’t. I remember feeling that first cold wind of late October. From there, it was a blur of heating from the gas furnace and me just trying to put one foot in front of the other. I’m still not quite sure just how I was able to get through that situation. But I did and I’m thankful to now be in the thick of Summer. For sure, I’m not looking forward to another Winter but this kind of Summer is amazing. This is also the first time that I don’t have any air conditioning from a heat pump. The house I bought does have a window air conditioner upstairs. That’s actually kind of nice to have some cooling as it can get kind of stuffy up in the bedroom. But honestly, I don’t even leave it on all night. Most nights cool off to the point I have to pull up the comforter to stay warm. That sure didn’t happen where I’m from. I’m going to savor every last moment of this perfect Summer weather. That’s because I know that I’m going to get whacked with the cold again before too much longer.

My wife and I started saving to replace the heating and cooling equipment about 2 years ago. It turned out to be just about perfect timing. We are headed into the Summer with a new heat pump and it seems like a whole new world. For sure, we were quite happy with our old air conditioning. Where we live, we only need a heat pump for both heating and cooling. Actually, there isn’t all that much heating to the Winter months. So the whole focus is on the air conditioning. Last Summer, we started to notice that our HVAC costs began spiking in July. And by September, the heat pump was running all the time to keep up with even minimal demand. We lucked out and got through the heat season before we had the new residential HVAC installed. So this Summer, we have been in for a treat so far. It’s hard to really convey just how stunned we’ve been with the evolution of HVAC technology. From the zone controlled HVAC to the smart thermostat, it’s a whole new game. Plus, the heat pump is now so supremely efficient that we are experiencing the lowest utility bills. We knew it would be better with the latest in residential HVAC but we had no idea to what degree. I love the fact that I can customize the zone controlled HVAC so we’re not overcooling parts of the house that are empty or used less. Plus, we had a ductless heat pump installed in the sunroom as well. So we can now enjoy air conditioning out there as well. Before we had the ductless heat pump installed, the sunroom was pretty much off limits except early in the morning. This Summer is going to be chock full of total air conditioning comfort.

So my wife and I sure had a surprise almost 18 months ago.

That was when we had the air conditioning tune up done early in the Spring.

That’s a wise choice around here given that temperatures in March can get to the upper 80’s during the day at times. So we’ve always scheduled the Spring HVAC maintenance early. But it wasn’t early enough as it turned out. The HVAC technician told us that he had real reservations about whether or not the heat pump would last through the Summer. That was a jolt. Of course, it shouldn’t have been since the heat pump was almost 25 years old. With all that HVAC maintenance, the heat pump was just never a problem and we simply didn’t think about replacing it. So we came into last Summer with a lame heat pump because we needed to save more money to replace it. We had to sort of organize a family meeting because we all had to do our part to help get the old heat pump through one more blazing Summer. That was going to be a tall order as we generally default to more air conditioning than less. We actually were cruising through July last year when my son bet me that it would last til October. That was too juicy a bet to resist and I took early September. Well, my son ended up winning the day on that one as that old heat pump actually lasted until we replaced it in November. That was one bet that I was quite happy to pay off.

It’s so tough saying goodbye to your parents.

Almost all of us have to deal with that scenario in one way or the other sometime in our lifetime. My brother and I lost our dad two years ago and it’s still tough to even think about him. But I think he would approve of having air conditioning in the cabin he left to us. This was his spot for sure. He was raised in a different era where hunting actually put meat on the table and in the freezer. The fact that his hunting cabin was on land owned by the family for generations made it all the better. My brother and I could hardly bring ourselves to visit the cabin much less start renovations that ended up including HVAC equipment. This was the place where my brother and I learned an awful lot about being grown men. There was something about how easy dad was when we were roughing it at the cabin. It was all just so simple out there. These days, I now understand why he would shed the commercial HVAC of the office for long weekends of solitude at the cabin. After we made a few visits just us, my brother and I decided that we wanted to make the cabin family friendly. Times had changed as we both adore our wives and want them with us. Plus, we both only have daughters. So adding satellite wi-fi and a couple of ductless heat pumps for the Summer made sense. We even spruced up the place with some new furnishings as well. Yea, I think dad would love hanging out here with his granddaughters.

My sister always makes fun of me because she says I purchase random items that are useless.

For instance, when I purchased the robot vacuum cleaner, she thought I was being ridiculous. She didn’t understand why I couldn’t just sweep my own house even after I explained that the vacuum can reach certain places in my home that I don’t always clean. Personally, I love the robot vacuum cleaner and it’s one of the best gadgets in my home. Aside from the robot vacuum cleaner, she thought that my portable air conditioner was a useless purchase, that was until it became our saving grace and provided a comfortable night of rest. Last month, we had a girls’ trip weekend with a few of our childhood friends. And we rented a cabin in the woods that overlooked a serene lake. The cabin had climate control, but when we got there, we noticed that it was a bit warm inside. After being inside the cabin for a few hours, we realized that the thermostat was at 80 degrees and hadn’t cooled down the cabin. As luck would have it, I had my portable air conditioner in the trunk of my car. I had purchased it a few days before the trip, and I forgot that it was in my car. I noticed it when I was packing for the trip and for some reason, I decided just to leave it there. Perhaps my guardian angels were protecting me because we were able to use the portable air conditioner when we realized the A/C in the cabin wasn’t working properly. All in all, the portable air conditioner became our saving grace, and I even got my sister to admit that it was a good purchase.
