I recently went out to visit my grandparents in the Southwest.
I grew up out there in the Southwest, where the temperatures can be extremely high in the summer. The heat is very oppressive out there and the dryness can be a hassle as well. My grandparents actually love the weather in the Southwest. I fear that they love it a little too much though. The reason I feel this way is that I recently visited them and discovered that they had been living without air conditioning in the middle of July for the past few weeks. I couldn’t believe that they were crazy enough not to call out the HVAC technician in the middle of June in such a hot and unforgiving place! At the least, they had some ceiling fans running and a few other fans blowing throughout the house. Grandpa had some sort of device in the bedroom running that he called a swamp cooler. It was an odd-looking, jerry-rigged piece of equipment that I admit kept the room pretty darn comfortable. I still insisted that they should call out an HVAC technician to get the air conditioner repaired immediately. I knew that my grandparents could afford simple HVAC repair. My grandparents are sitting on a decent chunk of change, after all. Admittedly though, that’s because they have been penny-pinchers their whole lives! Well, sometimes you need to live a little and splurge on basic comfort, like being cool in the middle of a desert in the summer!
