Lessen the load on your heating system

Heat energy moves from a warmer to a cooler place by nature.

So, if your home is energy efficient, heat loss will be much slower.

You may save money on energy bills because your heating system doesn’t have to work as hard. In addition, a less-stressed heating system requires fewer repairs and has a longer lifespan. With these practical tips, you can reduce the load on your heating system this winter! Drafts and higher energy bills are caused by air infiltration through your home’s envelope. Check all entry doors for drafts. If necessary, install new silicone weatherstripping. Under your doors, door sweeps work well to prevent drafts. Attic doors can be sealed with foam weatherstripping to prevent heat from leaking through. Attics should be insulated between R-30 and R-60 according to the federal Energy Star program. Fiberglass insulation should at least cover the joists and be 15 inches thick. Before you add insulation, seal attic air leaks with caulk and a can of expanding spray-in foam. Heat is lost through leaks and obstructions in air ducts. Wrap joints with metal tape and seal leaky ducts with aerosol sealant or mastic paste. Generally, windows have low R-values and can be a source of significant heat gain/loss. You can adjust heavy drapes to block or let sunlight in. Open drapes on sun-struck windows during the day. At night, close the drapes. There are many styles and designs of shades, and they are adjustable. Energy-efficient window treatments include shutters and panels. Awnings can add charm to your home and lessen the burden on your furnace.
