A portable heater in the office started a fire

I actually remember when the heating system was having problems at the office. It became so cold there and everybody kept telling the management to call the HVAC company. The management did call the HVAC company but were told they couldn’t come out for a few days because they were backed up. Since our management didn’t want to pay for emergency HVAC expenses, everybody had to wait. This caused a lot of people to bring in portable heaters until the HVAC system was working again. The management didn’t have a problem with this until somebody’s heater started a fire. I think the heater fell over onto some paperwork and started it on fire and then the fire started to spread quickly. Fortunately, the sprinkler system engaged and put the fire out relatively quickly. If it weren’t for the sprinkler system, everybody could have been burned up. We all still had to evacuate the building until everything was checked out and determined to be safe. You know it’s crazy that they asked everybody to please stick around and continue to work, but everybody was feeling a bit traumatized from the experience. A lot of people just went home but came back the following day. Fortunately, the HVAC professionals did come out to repair the heating system. It’s crazy because the damage from the fire was more costly than what an emergency repair would have cost, I hope our management team takes that into account. I mean, this all could have been avoided, but now they know how dangerous portable heaters in the office can be.
