We required the furnace at night

May afternoons can be quite pleasant, but my friend and I still find ourselves turning on the heater on many evenings.

  • As the sun sets, the temperature drops significantly.

My wife is the opposite of me when it comes to snuggling under the covers at night. She only covers her hips and shoulders while sleeping, leaving her arms and legs exposed. There have been a few occasions when she backed up against me for warmth, but it never lasted for long. She sits up in bed for a while to warm her back, and then she moves to the side of the bed. She once joked that she would have been better off born a cat, but she picked me instead, and now that spring has arrived, I’ve turned off the furnace so we can enjoy the warmer weather. The afternoon’s heat, I reasoned, would carry us through the night. To combat the daytime chill, I intended to build a fire in the fireplace. Before one particularly cold night, my wife and I both agreed that this would be a fun plan. Although I was hanging off the bed, she was wrapped all the way around me to keep me warm, so it wasn’t just that she was backed up against me. If I wanted to get warm, I had to get out of bed, turn on the heater, and then crawl over to her side of the bed. In the morning, she complained of a stiff neck and asked why I had pushed her off her pillow. I explained that I had gotten up to turn on the heater and had to move over to do so. It was the only place to relax and sleep.
