Radiant heated roof saves our butt in winter

Luckily, we installed a smart thermostat and radiant heating throughout the house several years ago

When my great-great-grandparents built their own house up in the Northwoods of Wisconsin I know that they never could have anticipated how times would change. In their lifetimes, technology really kicked into gear. Everything is completely different now than when my family was first settling into the country and trying to find their way. As such, I am happy to report that taking care of the old house my great-great-grandparents built has gotten a lot easier since they have passed. Back in the day, the ice cold winter season would regularly drop so much snow at a time that the roof had to be shoveled. If they did not shovel the sturdy roof of the house that they built, the snow was likely to get so heavy that it would cave in. Obviously, my great-great-grandparents would have been crushed by the weight of the snow, if not frozen by the brutally cold air. Today, we are lucky that there are modern heating and cooling solutions to take care of this unpleasant shoveling chore. We all live too far away from the old family home to make the dangerous winter trek on a regular basis. Luckily, we installed a smart thermostat and radiant heating throughout the house several years ago. Specifically, we installed radiant heated floors under the roofing tiles. Now, whenever a huge winter storm is about to blow through the area, we can easily clear the roof using the smart thermostat from hundreds of miles away. Staying in the warmth and safety of my own home sure beats trying to shovel a bitterly cold roof all season.
