Have you ever looked at someone and thought they had the best of luck? It appears that some people are just born with some kind of lucky gene where things always fall into place for them.

• But then there are others, who appear to be down on their luck and at times, there is no explanation for the way things play out.

My brother is one of those people where he was always unlucky. As a kid, he broke several bones in his body, as a teen, he got into numerous car accidents, and as an adult, he has been homeless, which btw wasn’t his fault, but still was an unlucky mishap for him. He became homeless because his apartment building burnt down from a fire that began because of faulty wiring inside an HVAC unit. He lived in an older apartment building, and he always complained about things breaking inside his home. Unfortunately, at the time, he couldn’t afford to move, so he continued to live inside the rented space. After the fire, he came to live with me and mentioned that the HVAC unit was old and the maintenance for the building barely performed any service on the unit. Wiring issues are one of the major causes for HVAC fires. And if wires are frayed, loose or corroded, the problem should be fixed immediately. Perhaps the HVAC fire could have been prevented, we will never know. I am just glad that my brother made it out of his apartment without any major issues. He lost all his possessions in the fire, but his life is way more important than those material things.

Isn’t it great when you can find a solution to a problem that you’ve had for years? Well, my husband Josh is currently jumping for joy because he finally found the best solution to keep the garage cool. A few years ago, he turned our garage into a gym, and he has been trying to find ways to keep the space comfortable, especially during the warmer months. We live in the southern part of the country, so you can only imagine how brutally hot our weather is. During the Summer, the temperatures easily warm up into the 90s on a daily basis. And if you’ve ever tried to work out in 90-degree weather, it’s not the most comfortable situation to be in. So, over the years, he tried using fans as well as a portable evaporative cooler, but those provided no real relief for the heat. Last year, he finally spent the extra money and purchased a portable air conditioner, and while it was better than the fan and the air cooler, it still wasn’t enough for the hot garage. Finally, after he had a conversation with one of his friends, he decided to invest in a ductless mini split air conditioner. That was a game-changer for him. Not only does the ductless mini split air conditioner provide cooling, but it also produces heat. This means that he could use his gym comfortably all year long. Josh was able to install the unit in just under 2 hours. Ever since, he’s been so excited about using his gym all year long.

It’s been a whole modern world for me the last 9 or 10 months.

And it still has left a bitter taste in my mouth, just for the record, I hate this sort of Winter, until just this year, I hadn’t even seen a gas furnace much less used one. But fine Lord, I used that gas furnace like it was a lifeline for five months. I moved up here in late October which was gorgeous. The fall was spectacular. That is until it wasn’t. I remember feeling that first cold wind of late October. From there, it was a blur of heating from the gas furnace and me just trying to put one foot in front of the other. I’m still not quite sure just how I was able to get through that situation. But I did and I’m thankful to now be in the thick of Summer. For sure, I’m not looking forward to another winter time however this kind of Summer is amazing. This is also the first time that I don’t have any A/C from a heat pump. The home I bought does have a window a/c upstairs. That’s easily kind of nice to have some cooling as it can get kind of stuffy up in the kitchen. But truthfully, I don’t even leave it on all night. Most nights cool off to the point I have to pull up the comforter to stay warm. That sure didn’t happen where I’m from. I’m going to savor every last moment of this perfect Summer weather. That’s because I know that I’m going to get whacked with the cold again before too much longer.

This was the place where my brother and I learned an bad lot about being grown men. There was something about how simple dad was when my pal and I were roughing it at the cottage, however it was all just so easy out there. These nights, I now understand why he would shed the commercial Heating, Ventilation and A/C of the office for long weekends of solitude at the cottage. After my pal and I made a few visits just us, my brother and I decided that my pal and I wanted to make the cottage family friendly. Times had changed as my pal and I both savor our wives and want them with us, plus, my pal and I both only have daughters; So adding satellite wi-fi and a couple of ductless heat pumps for the Summer made sense. My fine friend and I even spruced up the place with some modern furnishings as well, yea, I guess dad would cherish hanging out here with his granddaughters.

From the zone controlled Heating, Ventilation & A/C to the smart thermostat, it’s a whole new game. Plus, the heat pump is now so supremely efficient that my associate and I are experiencing the lowest bi-weekly bills. My associate and I knew it would be better with the latest in residential Heating, Ventilation & A/C however my associate and I had no idea to what degree. I appreciate the fact that I can customize the zone controlled Heating, Ventilation & A/C so we’re not overcooling parts of the house that are empty or used less. Plus, my associate and I had a ductless heat pump installed in the sunroom as well. So my associate and I can now love air conditioning out there as well. Before my associate and I had the ductless heat pump installed, the sunroom was pretty much off limits except early in the morning. This Summer is going to be chock full of total air conditioning comfort.

So my fiance & I sure had a surprise almost 18 months ago.

That was when my associate and I had the air conditioning tune up done early in the Springtime. That’s a wise option around here given that temperatures in May can get to the upper 71’s while in the afternoon at times. So my associate and I came into last Summer with a lame heat pump because my associate and I needed to save more currency to update it. My associate and I had to sort of organize a family meeting because my associate and I all had to do our part to help get the seasoned heat pump through one more blazing Summer. That was going to be a tall order as my associate and I generally default to more air conditioning than less. My associate and I very were cruising through July last year when my son bet me that it would last til September. That was too juicy a bet to resist & I took early September. Well, my son ended up winning the afternoon on that one as that seasoned heat pump very lasted until my associate and I updated it in September. That was one bet that I was quite glad to pay off.
