Shivering my way through school.

I hated school.

I didn’t think there was anything they could teach me that I couldn’t learn at home.

Granted, I went to school over fifty years ago, and things have changed. What I learned in the fifth grade, is being taught in first or second. The one thing I did learn was that being comfortable in class is important. I always had a hard time concentrating in school. The teachers thought I was slow, but in reality, I was always cold. I finally opened my mouth one day and told the teacher that it was frigid when you were sitting by the window. If they could make it warmer in the classroom, I may be able to concentrate and do better at school. I remember how fascinated I was when the teacher grabbed a piece of ice and put it up against the thermostat. I asked her how the thermostat worked. She explained about how the temperature dropped from the ice, which signalled to the furnace that we needed more heat. She left the ice on the thermostat until it melted. Once the ice melted, the temperature was already up to where it was supposed to be. She had the thermostat set at seventy-two, which was warmer than my home. I always remembered that day. When I graduated high school, I was still thinking about that ice and the thermostat. It was the reason I went to school to become an HvAC technician, and I now owned one of the biggest HVAC companies in our state. I learned a lot that day, when the teacher told me about ice and a thermostat.
